Jake Life Update: April-May 2023
What is Jake up to in April/May 2023?
What is going on Gym n Japan, Jake here this week! As I am sure some of you may know, I have been living in Canada since November of 2022. With the winter season finishing in early April of 2023, I have since been travelling around in a car and camping everywhere for the last 3-4 weeks now. So what have I seen? Where have I been? What have I been doing and what is the plan for the summer?
So for the first 2 weeks of my travels, from around the 17th of April until the 29th of April, myself and good friend Ben who is from the UK and I met up at SilverStar went and hired a car, got some camping shit and went off exploring British Columbia and Alberta. Most of the stuff like the tent, camping chair and Esky we got for free/borrowed from Ben’s (at the time) girlfriend from Vernon. So that saved us some decent money. The biggest expenses were food, COFFEE every morning, sleeping mat, fuel, the car and sleeping bag.
Because we were camping, like absolute morons, in the early season of spring, the nights were still freezing cold. So we couldn’t go cheap on the sleeping bags.
The basic route we took was:
Vernon - Nakusp
Nakusp - Creston
Creston - Calgary - Dinosaur Provincial Park
Dinosaur Park - Banff
Attempted to go from Banff to Jasper…but it was too cold and snowing
Jasper - Golden
Golden - Salmon Arm - Vernon

Along the way we saw a lot of cool shit! Below I will put some pictures. We basically did a hike in most places, froze our asses off, had coffee in every town that offered it, saw the wildlife, went to about 4 hot springs and made small stops at popular attractions.

Overall those 2ish weeks were definitely an adventure. Most of the campsites were still closed so we had to wing it most nights with finding whatever was available at the time. Every planned spot was still closed due to being covered in snow and not open. Once we got sick of being cold, rained on and having shitty weather, we cut the trip short and went back to Vernon to stay with Ben's girlfriend Savannah for 4 days.

After this, I met up with some more friends after catching a 7 hour bus from Vernon to Vancouver to do yet more camping. This time with the hopes of it being a lot warmer and sunny. Also didn't go back to Dinosaur Park this time, because it's a long ass and boring drive out there.
I basically did the same shit again as my first trip, with similar shitty weather for the first week, except this time once arriving in Banff and Jasper, getting a lot more sun, warmer weather and seeing a lot more of the wildlife which we had hoped for.
The plan for the summer is to find a job and then return to SilverStar for the winter again. Then I will travel through the US and return home to Australia…of course stopping by to see Haydon again first.
