My Dress-Up Darling: Anime review
Hey Gym N Japan fam!
Here's another sneaky review for you all on something a little different that isn’t just another action show! The show in question is: My Dress up darling / Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru, this show is rated 8.40 on MAL and ranked #169 all time as we write this blog. The show only finished airing at the end of march/ winter 2022 for the anime season nerds :P
The reason we are doing this is because we both just fell head over heels for Miss Kitagawa. The show has a similar vibe to Kaguya-sama and Don’t Toy with me Miss Nagatoro. If you haven’t watched this show yet, read this review and thank us later for changing your mind.
The reason it took us so long to get this review up is because it has taken me forever to actually finish. Not that it was a bad show by any means but I just kept getting roped into playing Fortnite instead so it’s actually Jake's fault hahah! I think Haydon can hardly blame me for this shit, I managed to watch the entire show in like 2 days even while playing games and going to the gym. He has no excuses here, he is simply, A BOT!
IT BEGINS
Alright let’s dive into this review! I knew from the moment I saw the previews for this anime last year that it was going to be awesome and it did not disappoint! The first episode hit me quite hard and I was already in love with Kitagawa. The trigger was definitely the fact that she just didn’t care what others thought of her interests and also hated that people would shame others for their interests. This is where our boy Gojou (Not to be confused with Daddy Gojo) comes in, big time nerd for dolls and no real friends to hang out with. Gojou and Kitagawa then have a few chance encounters that lead them to bonding and gojou creating some sick cosplay outfits for kitagawa. The connection between the two characters really draws you in and makes it feel like you have been on their journey with them. Kitagawa’s attitude to what others think gives the viewers so much confidence to be themselves and not care what others think of them.
It is interesting to see the completely different contrast between the two characters, one being Gojou who isn’t very social and feels awkward about his love for hina dolls then there is Kitagawa who is super social and happy with expressing her passions to anyone who will listen. These two coming together was just so wholesome because it made Gojou start to accept who he was and his passions, all it took was a hottie to make him accept it ;). Of course this is all happening while he is oblivious to the fact she is head over heels for him lol considering the manga is still going I am sure we will see a lot more in the future due to its popularity.

The animation was quite good for this type of anime with some cool animated scenes like the legs in the eyes shadow hahah! It’s not a big action show so there’s not much to comment on other than it being quite good. We think the way they did the animation complimented the story line well. The lines weren’t too harsh and they didn’t go over the top with design unless it was needed. During the normal scenes there was good detail, enough to keep us engaged. But once the costumes were on display, they increased the budget…and went ham on the design and detail of those critical scenes.
The side characters and the pacing of the show was also a really big highlight for this show. It didn’t move too slowly but also didn’t feel rushed. It leaves the door open for a lot more to come in the future which we love about the show. We think that a lot of manga creators and anime studios have finally got the formula right in terms of how to keep us, the audience engaged and wanting to come back for more. This, besides Haydon, is a show you will start and want to finish right away, even if it’s 1am HAHAHA!
Overall, a great show would be recommended! Should be added to our list of wholesome romance anime that we did a few months back.
