Top 10 Anime for Beginners: What should I watch?

What is going on Gym n Japan Fam!!! If you are someone new to the world of anime, you’re not sure what to watch, and your mates keep recommending things like “Boku no Pico” and “Highschool DxD”, then this blog is for you. In this post, we are going to discuss what we think are our top 10 anime recommendations for those who want to try something new or get into anime. We won't dive too deep into them and spoil them but we will give you an insight to whether or not the story is finished, how many episodes etc

So to kick start things off, with number 1 on the list, we have:

Jujutsu Kaisen

24 episodes so far! With a prequel movie coming out titled Jujutsu Kaisen 0 possibly at the end of 2021. This show does not mess around. It gets straight into the action and the animation is incredible. Easily shooting up to one of the best anime of 2021 in my opinion and in my top 10 anime for beginners.

Episodes: 24

Studio: MAPPA

Genre: Action, Demons, Supernatural, School, Shounen

Hunter x Hunter (2011)

Now before you say, Jake and Haydon, but I just searched this and it’s over 100 episodes...trust us when we say it is the best 100+ episodes of your life. Easily one of the best shows I have ever seen, 10/10. Character development is on point, animation is unreal and the fight scenes are too good. A few training arcs as they fight power struggles with villains makes this show 2nd on the list.

Episodes: 148

Studio: Madhouse

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Shounen, Super Power

Demon Slayer

24 episodes and 1 movie and another season to be released in 2021! The manga is finished so the anime will adapt in no time! Honestly great for character development, action, gore, demons. I wouldn't put it at the number 1 purely because it's not finished yet. Newbies may be turned off by the fact that it's so short but could be something to look forward to? That's why we have added this to the list!

Episodes: 26 (currently - still going + movie)

Studio: ufotable

Genre: Action, Demons, Historical, Shounen, Supernatural

My Hero Academia

This show is not quite finished yet, but from what is completed, you will not be disappointed. Super powers, super villains, one of the best storylines and amazing character development. Minimal plot armour when compared to other shonens out there. The main character and the side characters are all super relatable and you may even find yourself liking the villains more than the heroes.

Episodes: 113 (currently - still going + 2 movies)

Studio: Bones

Genre: Action, Comedy, Super Power, School, Shounen

Attack on Titan

Jam packed with action, gore, blood and giants. This is the anime I am sure you have heard all of your friends talking about. It is being talked about for a reason. It is very different to many other mainstream shows out there. There’s not much more to say other than, go watch it.

Episodes: 75 (currently - still going)

Studio: MAPPA

Genre: Action, Military, Mystery, Super Power, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Two brothers that fight to return their bodies and mother. The first episode throws you straight in the deep end, no wind up, just straight in! Strap yourself in for the top rated anime of all time! At only 64 episodes...you will probably end up finishing it in a week, if not sooner.

Episodes: 64 (completed)

Studio: Bones

Genre: Action, Military, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Magic, Fantasy, Shounen

Death Note

For a short, sweet and finished anime. This psychological thriller keeps you guessing non-stop with so many of the characters being super geniuses. When you think you have worked something out, think again. The main character has you guessing what is right and what is wrong. You need to strap yourself in for this one. It is about 37 episodes of non-stop psychological action.

Episodes: 37 (completed)

Studio: Madhouse

Genre: Mystery, Police, Psychological, Supernatural, Thriller, Shounen

Sword art online

Love sword fights? And gaming? Here you go! The first season is absolute FIRE!! It does dip a little in season 2 but then picks right up after that. Every episode is filled with awesome action and fighting. Set in VR worlds where they must fight for their lives in the real world...who doesn’t love an OP main character that kicks ass. I think it is around 4 seasons now, but can guarantee you will binge watch this. Also don't let the MAL ratings fool you! The rating is well below what we would personally rate it! It is rated #2810 by score but ranked #4 for popularity, so what are you waiting for.

Episodes: 95

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Genre: Action, Game, Adventure, Romance, Fantasy

Haikyuu

Sports anime can't be good right? WRONG! Honestly one of the best is Haikyuu (meaning Volleyball) with 87+ episodes plus various movies and OVAs. This show makes volleyball seem like the only sport in Japan that matters and even made us want to play volleyball! The characters are always developing/ learning new skills whether it's individually or as a team. Even if you aren’t a big sports fan you will be!

Episodes: 87 (Currently - still going)

Studio: Production I.G

Genre: Comedy, Sports, Drama, School, Shounen

Code Geass

This anime has 50 episodes and finishes the whole story! No need to wait for another season.. This show is full of action, robots and even could be considered psychological! Honestly up there with the best anime of all time with season 2 being ranked 18 on MAL. There is a lot of character development and thought put into the storyline with it being a great watch for anyone who loves intelligent characters just like death note.

Episodes: 50 Episodes (completed)

Studio: Sunrise

Genre: Action, Military, Sci-Fi, Super Power, Drama, Mecha, School
