Top 5 WHOLESOME Romance Anime!

Happy Sunday Gym N Japan fam! Want to know of a great romance anime but unsure where to start? Guess what? We have you covered with our overwhelming knowledge of random shit and anime of course.

Obviously you are really struggling to find an anime recommendation if you are here? Because we know what MAL can be like when searching… When searching for romance anime it will default order it to most members which generally aren't the best way to determine a good romance anime. Also when searching by rating it might be good for other reasons and not the wholesome romance we are after.. Things that come up in these searches are high school DxD, Date a Live, Sword art Online and even prison school… bruh that ain't romance lol. So here we have compiled some of the best wholesome romance anime, keyword being wholesome.

1. Your name.

This one is a no-brainer and definitely one of the best anime movies we’ve ever seen. Although this is just a movie, and in just under 2 hours you will get your romance fix… trust! The two main characters (boy and girl) wake up one day and their consciousness is switched with each other, obviously this creates a massive confusion at the start which then they start to get used to.

Honestly I (Jake) have watched this movie about 4-5 times and without fail I love it each and every time. The story is so in depth, you feel like you know the characters. The animation is on a whole other level, as expected by Makoto Shinkai and his other movies.

MAL Rating: 8.88 and ranked 23rd for best anime.

2. Fruits Basket

The main Character Tohru Honda, is a highschool girl who lives a normal life with her mum until a tragedy strikes her and she is forced to live in a tent. That is until she is taken in by a family called the Soma’s. The story takes a turn when she finds out the family of somas are each a different Zodiac spirit animal. To which when the opposite gender hugs them, they turn into that animal for a short period. This show has a lot of character development and you end up liking almost all of the characters.

MAL Rating: The Final season is rated 9.06 with all other seasons being in the high to mid 8+ range!

3. Horimiya

Released in 2021, this show has one of the best love/romance stories I have ever seen…and I have seen more than I would like to mention. The story starts off so innocent and you’re not sure what to expect, but two people meet by chance and their story develops into something amazing. It is one of those shows you just can’t stop watching.

MAL Rating: 8.21

4. Josee, the Tiger and the Fish

This movie came out in mid 2021 and had quite a unique story to it. The art style was really well done too which is always visually pleasing. The story follows a boy who works in a cafe, but also needs money to afford going over to Mexico to become a marine biologist…I think. One day he saves a girl in a wheelchair racing down a hill and stops her from crashing. Afterwards he is offered a job from Josee’s (the girl he saved) grandma to care for her. There is a lot of back and forth between the two as he tries his best to get along with her but she doesn’t want a bar of it. The story further develops and ends really well. That is enough from me as I don’t want to spoil too much.

MAL Rating: 8.51

5. ReLIFE.

Although Jake probably won’t agree with this one I’m still putting it in here because it really hits home and kinda makes you a bit emotional. If you had the chance to redo your life would you? Of course things that have happened to us can never be undone but this show is more about making better choices when in highschool and living life to the fullest. This show is based around that concept where a chosen person is turned back into a high school student to redo his high school days *not time travel*. Arata is the main character and is 27 years old, the reason he was chosen was because his life was just going wrong and moving from job to job. You’ll have to watch and find out how this turns into a romance anime. There are a total of 17 episodes in this series between season 1 and 2.

MAL Rating: 8.00

Wholesome but just didn’t make the cut for various reasons:

I want to eat your pancreas: Because we cried it didn’t make the list.

Your Lie in April: Kinda dragged out and makes you want to cry.

Weathering with you: The others above are just slightly better so maybe ranked 7?

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU: All you nerds are gonna hate us for not having this in there but I (Haydon) didnt love it as much as others do. It does have great character development just not for me..

Toradora: The ending annoyed us.

A Silent Voice: Should have been included defs ranked 6th tho. Only reason for this is because it doesn’t start out that wholesome but turns wholesome.

And there you have the 5 most wholesome romance anime according to us!
