The Top 5 short anime worth wasting your Sunday afternoon on!

Hey Gym N Japan Fam! Want to watch an anime but don’t want to commit this time to watch 1000 episodes *cough* One Piece *cough*. Obviously watching anime with a lot of episodes that probably doesn’t end can be a bit daunting and we get it. We have both found it difficult to start a long anime because it will mean you can’t watch heaps of small ones! Well this week we are going to discuss some short anime that we have watched throughout our years that were decent for around 12 episode anime. This list will only include anime that have proper endings without a cliffhanger where you hate your life until next season.. These anime won’t necessarily be highly rated but still quite good. We have limited this list to only 5 anime all up and hopefully are the types of anime you have been looking for!

In no particular order they are:

91 days

Alright, Jake hasn’t watched this so I will take the lead with this one. Maybe this little blurb will be enough to convince him? Either way I think this was a great show and the story was completed with only 12 episodes. Love Action, drama and old style gang violence? Well this could be for you! This has a savage revenge plot in the gang world and goes as well as you’d expect. It starts with the typical tragedy and emotional suffering for the main character which makes him want to seek revenge on the gang that took everything he held dear to him. I’m getting pretty good at describing things without giving away much.. don’t want to spoil too many things for you before you watch! If you want to know more, have a read of the MAL synopsis linked above. It is very different for an anime but I really enjoyed it.

Akudama Drive

Here we have another anime that Jake hasn’t watched.. to be fair this one is only new and came out in 2020 so I won’t roast him too much… That’s what makes these perfect for the list because if Jake hasn’t watched it, maybe they are good options for our fan base to enjoy! Alright this show is based around criminals known as Akudama who are just doing whatever they can to survive and the main character is somehow mixed up in all of this. It is based in a futuristic neo tokyo, with awesome technology and colours which adds to the great fights that occur in this series. Plenty of massive fights, great animation and a pretty decent plot adds to this show! I’d like to add that it’s good to see some quality original content that wasn’t adapted from a successful manga which could also be why no one has heard of it!

Episodes: 12

MAL rating: 7.65

Death Parade

This is a super cool classic anime. Not to say it’s old but it is one of the older anime compared to the others listed about. This show has a very unique storyline, with a white haired super gojo/kakashi vibe to him. He is the gatekeeper of heaven and hell. It has a messed up story at times. For example, imagine you and your best friend died in a car accident, then you have to play darts where each number is represented by an internal organ. Then each time a dart is hit you experience pain associated to that part. Then it’s basically the last man standing. The games bring out the best in and worst in people you thought were the most loved to you. An unreal Opening song makes it catchy from the start.

Episodes: 12

MAL rating: 8.18

Horimiya

All I can say is…THIS SHOW IS AMAZING!!! A super different but interesting slice of life, love story anime. I don’t want to give away too much about the show, but the 2 main characters, at first glance, don't appear suited until everything unfolds and it is a journey you won’t want to miss out on. On the surface, the thought of Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura getting along would be the last thing in people's minds. After all, Hori has a perfect combination of beauty and brains, while Miyamura appears meek and distant to his fellow classmates. However, a fateful meeting between the two lays both of their hidden selves bare.

How heavy are the dumbbells you lift?

Who are we? Gym n Japan...there’s no better show out there than this one that represents perfectly who we are. This show is essentially what the title says, lifting dumbbells. The perfect weekend binge show which is lighthearted and funny all at once. During a regular after-school grub crawl, gluttonous high schooler Hibiki Sakura is confronted about her ever-expanding waistline by her best friend, Ayaka Uehara. With her attempts at solitary exercise failing miserably, Hibiki decides to join the newly opened Silverman Gym. At her orientation, Hibiki runs into student council president and school idol Akemi Souryuuin. However, it soon turns out that Hibiki is in for a lot more than she bargained for. Not only is Silverman Gym full of world-renowned bodybuilders and athletes, but to make matters worse, Akemi turns out to be a total muscle fetishist! Grossed out by the scene unfolding before her eyes, Hibiki begins to leave, only to be stopped by trainer Naruzou Machio. Completely enthralled with her newfound Prince Charming, Hibiki signs up as a gym member. Now, as a result of her spur-of-the-moment decision, Hibiki must adapt to her new lifestyle.
