What makes a good gym?

Hey Gym N Japan Fam!

Guess what, it’s not a Kaguya review becauseeee Haydon didn’t watch it in time… typical. Absolute clown, I thought if I chucked it at the end of the last blog I’d be able to get him to smash it out, but he’s a bot…

Next on the agenda we are going to talk about “what makes a good gym” because we want you to know what to look out for when choosing a gym! There are so many things that make a gym good and we are here to tell you our opinions on the matter.

Friendly admin/ sales person/ manager

Probably one of the most important things is the person that you see as soon as you walk into the gym! Like you want them to be friendly or at least acknowledge you as soon as you walk in the door. Obviously it can be very difficult to go to the gym after a hard days work and you won’t want to dread going to the gym either so it is an important thing. It is important for them to be friendly but not pressure you into a massive conversation you feel bad about ditching.. nothing worse than trying to ditch a convo when you just want to get on with your workout.

Obviously some gyms are 24/7 accessible and there won’t always be someone there to greet you, but especially as a new person in the gym, having family friendly staff is so much more welcoming and enjoyable to go to the gym. You know the gyms we are talking about, when you walk in, the vibe is totally off and all they care about is your money, we have all been there.

If the gym charges you $250 a year and has shit staff but good facilities, then tbh...who cares, at that point you're paying only for the gym, and you shouldn't care about the service for that price.

A Basketball Court

Because Jakes gym has one and I am jealous.

  • great for a warmup

  • Great for becoming the next Lebron

Honestly it’s also a great functional area for things like box squats, walking lunges and cardio or ab work at the end.

This is not really a necessity, but once you've been in a gym like this with something so unique, you start comparing other gyms as inferior to this because they don't have these facilities. Honestly, convenience is a big thing that keeps people consistent in the gym. So find one that works for you...even if it doesn't have a basketball court (peasants)

A Sauna

Because Jakes gym also has one.

  • Great for detoxing

  • Great for the end of a workout

  • Useful for the end of the day - when used at the end of the day, your internal body temperature will drop to try cool your body down. This reduced internal or core temperature can help with having a good nights sleep, feeling refreshed the next day

  • Always good for winter to keep warm

Gawd damnnn that sauna looks goooood!!

Good Cheap to Quality Ratio

Ooft a very fine line in the gym world! The cheap to quality ratio is honestly one of the hardest things to get right because everyone thinks a good gym is too expensive and a cheap gym is usually sh#t.. only going on our experience alright..

And by quality we are talking about well maintained equipment and a good range of equipment. For example Jakes gym has so many great qualities and we would say that it hits the mark for all of it. One downfall would be that some of the equipment is old but they maintain it so it’s all good.

Let’s use Darwin as an example.

Ifitness = cheap but sh#t/ bad quality

Snapfitness = expensive but good quality

*also note that Darwin is a hell of a lot more expensive than Adelaide or anywhere in the country.

So within this I am going to include an important point of BEING CLEAN because we believe that this is a make or break of all gyms. Like how hard can it be to just give your equipment a quick wipe every few days. The reason it is under this category is because if it’s not cleaned well, the quality decreases in our minds.

Being the Right Amount of Busy

Probably one of the hardest ones to tell from the beginning. This will come with time spent in the gym and figuring out the trends. If you are unsure, just ask the gym manager and they will be happy to tell you. The peak times are usually before or straight after work about 5:30 - 8am and 5 - 7pm.

Steps to test this out. When you do a free trial, make sure that you go during the peak times to see how busy it is/ how hard or easy it is to get equipment.

Generally if you can get the equipment you want during the peak times, it is a good amount of busy. You definitely don’t want to be waiting for equipment constantly. Honesty most gyms are the same, it’s only quite rare where you can find a gym (like Jake’s) where you can happily and freely workout at almost any time of the day.

In conclusion

Jake has an amazing gym with clean facilities, big blokes who are friendly and willing to help you out, a basketball court in the middle of the gym, a sauna, functional area, good options in terms of memberships and new useful equipment.

You don’t need to rush into a gym membership, just take your time and find the one that is right for you. Because as we all know, there are plenty of gyms out there for all types of people.
