Why do I feel terrible after I finished an anime? And how do I get over this feeling?

Updated: Dec 18, 2022

For those who don’t understand this feeling, this is something that really hits hard, like we mean really hard. It can take 1-2 weeks to recover from and leaves you feeling empty, soulless and unsure of what to do next. In this week's sad, sorry and depressing blog we discuss why you’re left feeling like crap after such a good anime.

We first want to clarify that these feelings of emptiness only come from good anime - usually. But the ending can still leave you feeling like absolute garbage. You physically and mentally can not, I repeat, can not watch these types of anime 2 times in a row. They must be broken up with something happier or filled with plot armor in between shows.

So let’s just jump right into this week's deep and dark blog. These are some of the things that you may or may not have thought about when finishing an anime,

Unanswered Questions:

This one is not only sad but also very annoying, especially when an anime is completed and there is no new season coming. These unanswered questions could just leave it up to your imagination without actually telling you what happened… the normal anime watcher wants closure.

Your Favourite Character Died:

We have become so used to plot armor, where there is no way in hell that the main character or your favourite character is going to die. Yet in these series, they build this amazing relationship with the viewers and then all of a sudden, or even not all of sudden, that particular character dies. And what’s worse, when they die for some stupid cause that you don’t agree with. We would love to give some examples but if we did that it will probably ruin your experience and wont feel as bad as we did when we finished..

Obviously there are some anime that kill off characters well and make their sacrifices worth the watch.

Open Ending or Hated the Ending

You know what we mean, those anime with a 10/10 story and plot, only to be completely and rottenly spoiled by the last 1-2 episodes which completely ruin the entire show.

The Main Characters Never Kissed or Ended Up in a Relationship Like They Were Supposed to

This one honestly hits hard the most sometimes… like why even make a romance anime if they don't end up getting together?

Having to Google The Meaning of the End

When the ending makes no sense or you’re unsure of what to make of those last few post credit scenes mean to the overall story and plot that you end up going down the Reddit or YouTube rabbit hole of finding out the true meaning of it all just to fill that void inside of you.

Immediately Googling if there will be another season

When deep down you knew before even starting the anime that there wouldn’t be another season but you end up googling if there will be a sequel anyway because there was so much more you wanted to see, so much untold story, more you needed to know and more you wanted to see.

You related to the anime too much / made you feel like you aren’t good enough

Alright this is probably the number one reason that you feel like absolute garbage after an anime… You are probably thinking / questioning why do I feel shit after an anime that was really good? I (Haydon) sometimes feel bad after watching some great anime like sword art online. This can be called post anime depression.. I think at times it's the struggle the character went through yet they are still pushing through the adversity. Whereas we have a minor inconvenience and its the end of the world… #dramatic. In the end I think we all just wish that we had a life like the anime character, whether that is a good romance in high school, cool superpowers etc etc.

When you feel bad because of this just remember that this is all make believe and no one has a life like this - usually the writer/ creator wished for it too which is why they created it.

So, you have come this far, and you’ve related to most of these above. So how do you get over these feelings of complete sadness and despair?

We are here to help so here are our top 3 ways to feel better after watching an anime that makes you feel like this.

1. Watch an anime immediately after

Sometimes you can be reeling in this despair and legit the only way to get out of this is to just watch something good straight away. For me (Haydon) I find that watching a good superhero or action anime is the way to go. It just makes me think about the action and forget about my internal sadness. For others it could be something calmer like a romance or if you are crazy; another anime that makes you feel terrible..

2. Think good thoughts

Remember that anime isn't real life so it shouldn't make you feel terrible. Just remember all the good things in your life because we are all great in our own ways.

3. Avoid the anime that make you feel crap

Obviously if you keep going into a depressive state after an anime maybe it is best to avoid it? Just google it before you watch then you will know its safe to watch.

Special tip: If the anime has a cliffhanger that made you feel crappy - consider reading the manga straight after because it might clear up those questions and make you feel a little better.

As always, thank you for reading to the end. We really do appreciate any and all of the support from everyone who reads our blog. We put a lot of time and effort into it so it is appreciated.

If you could go and share it on social media or even just tell your friends about it, the more we can spread our humour and love for Gym and Japan, the better the world would be.

Until next week ✌
